SHIRIN EBADI!

Why Shirin Ebadi?  

Shirin Ebadi is an Iranian lawyer, a former judge and human rights activist and founder of Defenders of Human Rights Center in Iran. On 10 October 2003, Ebadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her significant and pioneering efforts for democracy and human rights, especially women's, children's, and refugee rights. She was the first ever Iranian to receive the prize.

Why Ida B. Wells?  

Born a slave, Ida B. Wells became a civil rights powerhouse considered the equal of her well-known African American contemporaries such as Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois.  A journalist, suffragette, and passionate anti-lynching crusader, she refused to give up her seat on the railroad, almost a hundred years before Rosa Parks.

Why Elizabeth Garrett Anderson?  

Elizabeth Garrett Anderson was an English physician and feminist, the first Englishwoman to qualify as a physician and surgeon in Britain, the co-founder of the first hospital staffed by women, the first dean of a British medical school, the first female doctor of medicine in France, the first woman in Britain to be elected to a school board and, as Mayor of Aldeburgh, the first female mayor and magistrate in Britain..
